The qibla is the direction of the Ka'bah in Makkah, and facing it is a condition of the prayer. At home you know it without thinking. In an unfamiliar hotel room, a hospital, an airport or a friend's house, you have to work it out — and that is where most people get stuck.

Here are five ways to establish it, ordered from most convenient to most independent of technology, plus the ruling for when you simply cannot tell.

First, why the direction surprises people

The Ka'bah sits at roughly 21.42° N, 39.83° E. Makkah is south of most of Europe and North America — so the intuition says “face south-east.” From New York, the qibla is actually north-east. From London it is close to south-east. From Jakarta, west-north-west.

The reason is that the shortest route between two points on a sphere is a great circle, and great circles do not look straight on a flat map. The shortest path from North America to Makkah runs up over the north Atlantic and Greenland — the same reason a flight from Toronto to Dubai crosses the Arctic rather than the Sahara.

Rule of thumb

If a direction feels wrong because it seems to point “away” from Makkah on a world map, the map is the problem, not the direction. Trust a great-circle calculation — which is what every qibla app and compass uses — over the mental image of a flat map.

Method 1 — A qibla compass app

The fastest option. A qibla app takes your GPS position, computes the great-circle bearing to the Ka'bah, and shows it against your phone's compass.

Method 2 — A magnetic compass and true north

With a physical compass you need the qibla bearing for your city and one correction most people miss.

A magnetic compass points to magnetic north, which is not true north. The gap between them is magnetic declination, and it varies enormously by location — near zero in some places, more than 15° in others, and larger still at high latitudes. Qibla bearings are given relative to true north, so you must apply the correction.

These are approximate figures for the city centre, and a few degrees either way makes no practical difference to the validity of the prayer — the requirement is the general direction, not surveyor's precision.

Method 3 — The sun, twice a year

This is the most elegant method, and it needs no instrument at all. Because the Ka'bah lies between the tropics, the sun passes directly overhead in Makkah twice a year. At that exact moment, anywhere on earth where the sun is visible, facing the sun means facing the qibla.

At those minutes, stand a vertical object — a pole, a pen, the edge of a door — in sunlight. Its shadow falls directly away from the Ka'bah. Mark the line on the ground and you have a permanent qibla reference for that spot, accurate to a degree or so, with no compass and no battery.

Mosques have used this for centuries to verify their alignment. If you have a home prayer space, marking the line once on one of these days is worth doing.

Method 4 — Satellite maps

Open a satellite map, find the Ka'bah, and use a measuring tool to draw a line from your position to it. Most mapping tools show the great-circle path, giving you the true bearing directly.

Then orient yourself using a building, road or wall that appears in both the map and your surroundings. In a hotel room this is often the quickest reliable method: identify which way the building faces on the map, and work from there.

Method 5 — Ask, or look around

The most reliable method is frequently the least technical:

If two phones in the same room disagree, or the needle swings as you move, something is interfering with the magnetometer. Usual culprits:

The fix is the same in every case: calibrate with a figure-eight motion, move away from metal, hold the phone flat and level, and take the reading standing rather than sitting at a desk. If the reading is still unstable, cross-check with one of the non-magnetic methods above.

If you genuinely cannot tell

You are on a train at night, your phone is dead, there is nobody to ask. What then?

Make your best effort and pray. The obligation is to face the qibla to the best of your ability. Where the direction cannot be established with certainty, a sincere effort to determine it — ijtihad — is what is required, and a prayer performed on that basis is valid. If you later discover you were facing the wrong way, the prayer already prayed does not need to be repeated.

On a moving vehicle

For obligatory prayers on a plane, train or coach, face the qibla as best you can at the start and continue praying even as the vehicle turns. Where movement or space make this impossible, scholars permit praying in the direction you are able to face. Voluntary prayers on a journey have long been permitted in whatever direction the traveller is heading.

Common questions

How accurate does the qibla need to be?

For those far from Makkah, facing the general direction is sufficient — the majority position is that exact precision is required only for those who can see the Ka'bah itself. A few degrees of error does not affect the validity of the prayer.

Why do two qibla apps show different directions?

Usually magnetic interference rather than a difference in calculation — the great-circle bearing is simple mathematics and apps agree on it. A small number of apps also offer the “rhumb line” bearing, which follows a constant compass heading rather than the shortest path; the great-circle bearing is the standard and the one used by the overwhelming majority.

Does the qibla change during the year?

No. The Ka'bah does not move, so the bearing from any fixed point is constant. What does drift slowly over years is magnetic declination, which is why a compass reading needs the current correction while the true bearing stays the same.

What if I prayed and later found out the direction was wrong?

If you made a genuine effort to determine the direction, the prayer is valid and does not need repeating. If you realise mid-prayer, turn towards the correct direction and continue — you do not start again.

Can I use a paper map to work out the qibla?

Only with care. Common flat projections distort direction badly at high latitudes and can point you the wrong way entirely. A globe, a satellite map, or a great-circle calculation is far more reliable.
